Finding The Best Eyebrow Shape For Your Face

Your eyebrows are a characteristic facial feature that affects your whole appearance. Even if you’re an expert at make-up, badly-shaped eyebrows can ruin your look.

The ideal eyebrow shape should open up the entire eye area, and improve your face’s overall proportion. Although thick, strong brows are currently on trend, your eyebrow shape shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all. You need to choose a shape that not only fits your face, but also your overall image.

Here are some tips on how to find the right eyebrow shape for your specific face type.

Heart-shaped face

  • A narrow and pointed chin
  • Cheeks that are wider than forehead
  • Examples: Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry

If you have a heart-shaped face, you should probably stay away from thick and strong brows. Because the upper part of your face is quite prominent, it’s important that your brows don’t overpower your smaller jawline.

The idea is to create an eyebrow shape that is precise but not thick and bushy. Narrow or tight brow shapes will work well, balancing out the shape of your lower face without putting too much weight on the forehead.

Oval face

  • High cheekbones
  • The forehead is wider than the chin
  • The face tapers gently to a narrow chin
  • Examples: Beyonce, Rihanna

Congratulations, this is perhaps the most versatile face shape. There aren’t any rules to stick to, because oval faces can handle all sorts of eyebrows, from dark to light, thick to thin. Still, to maintain the balanced proportions of this face shape, it’s best to stick to classic brow shapes that aren’t too extreme.

You can experiment with angular arches that are slightly softer compared to those on a round face. You can also take bold sweeping lines that extend to the temples.

Square face

  • A squared jawline
  • The forehead, cheekbones and jawline are the same width
  • Examples: Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley

The most distinct feature of this face shape is the strong, square jawline. It emphasises the angular shape of the face. To counter this and look more feminine, you need to choose a brow shape that softens your appearance and lengthens your facial features.

This is best achieved with a soft, rounded brow of medium thickness. Make sure your brow is not too angular (it’ll make you look fierce) nor too round (it’s not strong enough for your face).

Round face

  • The face is widest at the cheeks
  • It is as broad as it is long
  • Examples: Mila Kunis, Chrissy Teigen

This is fairly rare face type. Women with round faces have a natural softness to their look; however, they also suffer from a lack of definition in the face. Therefore, they need to make sure that their round shape is contrasted with very angular brows.

A perfectly angled eyebrow helps to highlight and define the bone structure of the face. If your personality can take it, go for a higher and more dramatic arch.

Long face

  • The forehead, cheekbones and jawline are the same width
  • The face tapers to an oval chin
  • Examples: Gisele Bundchen, Sarah Jessica Parker

This face shape appears to be vertically stretched, or longer than average. What you need to do is compensate for its extra length by emphasising the horizontal features.

Ideally, the ends of your eyebrows should extend beyond the corners of your eyes. But be careful, you can overdo it, and arching eyebrows that stretch too far can make your eyes look sleepy. Another option is also the classic straight brow; it creates the illusion of a shorter face if you know exactly where to cut it off.

Diamond-shaped face

  • The widest point is at the temples and cheeks
  • The chin is slightly pointed
  • Examples: Serena Williams, Shakira

This is the rarest of all face shapes, and it can be very angular, where the temples and cheekbones really stick out. You need to soften the angles and make the face appear rounder, to balance out all your facial features.

Curved or rounded brows will make these wide facial features appear less broad. At the same time, don’t be afraid of making your round brow shape a bit longer to complement your jawline.
